The design duo Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram created a custom software to adapt and strengthen tree-like metal structure for this collection of 3D printed furniture, currently showing at the Istanbul Design Biennial. The Multithread collection was concebed using a software application created by Weisshaar and Kram, that it studies and analyses the pressure poitns on the supports and automatically alter the shape of the joints to enhance their load-bearing strength.
The Multithread process adapts the joint for asymmetric foces, adding support where required by twisting the joint or increasing its mass. It’s an automatic process that gives you the best shape and structure to adapt for the various wheight poitns. The yellow areas are to demonstrate how the force is distribuited through every joint, the brighter the are the more tension it has.
It was originally created as an installation for Nilafur Gallery in Milan, Multithread is now part of the Adhocracy exhibition at the Istanbul Design Biennial, which continues until 12th December.
Their design studio in 2002 was founded, Swedish designer Reed Kram and German designer Clemens Weisshaar.
