The head partners of this firm, architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, are the two main creators behind this design project that plans to transform a commercial area of Basel into a new urban quarter, with high-density residential blocks and two new parks.
The project planned for the Nordspitze Area includes three slim, cylindrical towers, one at 160-metres tall and two at 135-metres, that will mainly house residential buildings, but that will also include a few commercial projects. The project will reportedly provide 800 new apartments at different price points, providing homes for an estimated 1,400 people. As for stores, the design project doesn’t reveal any information about numbers. In addition to the buildings, the project contemplates a new city park that will fill the space around the towers.
The main commercial aspect of this project will focus on the already existing MParc Shopping Centre that will be enlarged and given a green roof, accessed by a green ramp filled with winding pathways and trees.
As for parking, the project itself plans on reducing the already existing number of car parking spaces, but the City of Basel plans to relocate those parking spots to another nearby area in order to facilitate the parking in an area that is planned to be density populated.
The project is still at the planning stage, with the finalized plans due to be submitted to the council in 2020, but all indicate that the Basel City Council is very interested in completing this project.
If built to the full height of 160-meters, the new residential towers would be three times higher than Basel’s current tallest residential buildings: The Sky Lights Schoren, which are 51 and 57-meters tall.
However, this project won’t be the tallest building in Vasel or Switzerland. That record still belongs to the famous Roche Tower, which is owned by pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche and that was also designed by Herzog & de Meuron. At 178-metres it is the tallest building in Switzerland.
