Dutch Design Week is almost beginning and with it comes Dutch Design Awards ceremony. Dave Hakkens is the best young designer which took the prize last year. Known as Mr. Phone Blok, he was born in Valkenswaard in 1988. Loves build things, do research, eat healthy and make movies.
This year’s ceremony will take place on the 24th of October, on the second weekend of the event. Since 2003 Dutch Design Awards (DDA) annually awards the very best of Dutch design in different categories. From the open entries a shortlist is made by selection committees. The international jury decides upon the winners. The Dutch Design Awards platform consists of different components. Besides the competition, DDA actively promotes Dutch design and the finalists (inter)nationally.

Dave Hakkens did an intership in Milan and graduated in SintLucas in 2009. In 2013, he graduated at Design Academy and did an internship with the renown Dutch designer, Dirk Vander Kooij.
Nowadays, Dave Hakkens is a big fan of The Story of Stuff, lives and works in Helmond in the Netherlands, and last year won the Dutch Design Young-talent award with his project “Phonebloks”.
The creators believe that electronics should be built in a modular way, with a universal platform for the whole world. Right now, focusing on the phone, the Phonebloks is a project where a modular phone can be easily upgrade, repair and customize.
